The museum of Muhammad Abd al-Wahab (1902-1991), Egypt’s iconic 20th century singer and composer, was inaugurated on the 4th of June 2002. It is located on the second floor of the Arab Music Institute, a building of distinct neo-Islamic architectural character, that was built in 1923 to be the first musical institute in the Middle East.
The museum is designed to give visitors a feeling of entering Abd al-Wahab’s own house. It contains his bedroom and office furniture as well as many of his personnel objects. In his bedroom, his wheelchair is displayed as well as. his clock, set on the date and time of his death.
The museum holds his oud (luth) and piano, as well as other musical instruments he used to play in his films. It also displays the golden microphone which he used for recording his songs. The famous white suit he was wearing when filming his first film al-warda al-bayda in 1932, is also on display. Visitors can watch his movies and listen to his songs. There is also an archive on his musical material. A section of the museum is dedicated to his childhood and his early years in the world of music and cinema.
